Volume 13 • Issue 1 | 2016 | ASIA Miner | 45 Events IN its second year, the International Mining and Resources Confer- ence (IMARC) held in Melbourne, Victoria from November 9-12, again surpassed expectations, developing and growing not just in the num- ber of attendees but also through new content, networking events and the calibre of international attendees. Organisers said there were more than 2100 attendees, a 6% increase over the 2014 event. IMARC 2015 also attracted more than 200 speakers, more than 100 sponsors and exhibitors, and more than 140 mining companies from around the world. With strong new additions to the line-up in 2015 such as the Junior Mining Hub, supported by the Victorian Government, the junior mining attendance grew by more than 600% from 2014. Innovation Alley, sup- ported by CSIRO, ensured that the industry had a place to meet and discuss some of the key innovations coming out of Australian start-ups. Hundreds of new attendees enjoyed the launch of the IMARC Free Seminar series including the inaugural AusIMM Explorers' Forum while Austmine again ran their successful Meet the Miners, which enabled participants to gain one-on-one time with some of the world's major mining companies. IMARC also focused on innovation and collaboration, and looked at some of the game-changing technology being developed by the in- dustry across the three-day Technology stream by Foundation Partners Austmine and the AusIMM. Produced by Foundation Partner the Victorian Government in associa- tion with DFAT, the Department of Industry and Austrade the Mining Sum- mit welcomed International ministers and governments from more than 15 countries, including Chile, Mexico, Ethiopia, Iran, Ukraine, Kenya and Cambodia as well as world-renowned experts from the US Geological Survey, PDAC and Engineers without Borders. Mines and Money Australia provided the investment focus at the con- ference and was the platform for international and national investors to learn about commodities, markets, jurisdictions and projects from around the world. Plenary sessions were well supported by major mining companies including MMG, Anglo American, FMG as well as key industry players including Oxfam, Sustainable Minerals Institute, The Fraser Institute and Australia's Federal Minister for Resources Josh Frydenberg. Orica, Foundation sponsor for the second year, gave visitors the op- portunity to tour the Bulkmaster Mobile Manufacturing Unit (MMU) and hear from Simon Gerrans, champion cyclist from the Orica GreenEDGE team. Delegates enjoyed the opportunity to network in the BHP Billiton Engagement Lounge and enjoyed many break-out sessions in the METS Ignited Delegate Lounge. Through the support of both the Victorian Government and the AusIMM, students from all over Aus- tralia entered into the IMARC Poster Competition and listened to some of Australia's leading industry experts during the Students Meet Industry Night. Alongside its major partners, IMARC has delivered a major forum where mining leaders, policy makers, fnanciers, technical experts, community relations, innovators, consultants and educators can col- laborate, learn and network on the local and international stage in Mel- bourne, Australia. IMARC continues to grow THE Mining Association, affliated in the German Engineering Feder- ation, the VDMA, is reporting falling sales but is optimistic that 2017 will bring a return to proft. As regards the global market, analysts are also expecting things to improve in 2016 and 2017. One reason for the cautious optimism is bauma, which takes place from April 11 to 17 in Munich, Germany. Experience shows that many customers delay purchasing deci- sions until bauma, where they can frst get an overview of the world market offering. Also as regards the rising number of customer in- quiries, VDMA says bauma is coming at a good time as an upturn would certainly do the sector a lot of good. The sector seems to be regaining optimism in time for bauma and this is also being backed up by registrations coming in from exhib- itors. Exhibition director of bauma Mareile Kästner, explains, "The current diffcult situation in the sector is not being refected in the registration fgures for exhibitors at bauma. The interest from mining companies and manufacturers of mining products in exhibiting at bauma is still very high." 2016 is the 31st edition of bauma, the world's leading trade fair for construction machinery, building material machines, mining ma- chines, construction vehicles and construction equipment. It is or- ganised by Messe München GmbH. The last bauma, held in 2013, broke all previous records. It attract- ed 3421 exhibitors from 57 countries, 535,065 visitors from more than 200 countries and encompassed 575,000 square metres of exhibition space. Messe München managing director Stefan Rummel said, "The frst bauma took place in 1954 and occupied 20,000 square me- ters. Since that time, bauma has grown enormously. In the 1950s, bauma was an annual show. Nowadays it takes place every three years. "Our bauma show never stands still and neither does our compa- ny. Over recent years, Messe München has built up global compe- tence in the organization of international trade fairs for construction machinery. The successful concept behind bauma has been trans- ferred to a range of countries outside Germany - namely China, India and South Africa - in each case taking into account the needs of those regional markets. "Apart from a high exhibitor and visitor participation, I expect that bauma 2016 will again be an unforgettable event. This show is with- out a doubt the most important trade fair worldwide for the con- struction machinery industry. Moreover, the bauma atmosphere is unique - bauma is huge, it is overwhelming, enormously busy and international." Strong interest in bauma 2016
