Under the agreement, Rio Tinto and Caterpillar will work together in creaঞng an automated mine operaঞon that makes best use of data analyঞcs and integraঞon to enhance safety, opঞmise producঞon, boost mining machine uঞlisaঞon and lower costs. Rio Tinto Iron Ore chief execuঞve Chris Salisbury said that the Company was pleased to be partnering with Caterpillar and WesTrac, the regional Cat ® dealer, to help make Koodaideri the most technology-enabled and innovaঞve mine in our Pilbara iron ore network. "Technology is rapidly changing our mining operaঞons as we harness innovaঞon to make our operaঞons safer, smarter and more producঞve. This extension of our partnership with Caterpillar and WesTrac represents an exciঞng step for our business," commented Mr Salisbury. "The Caterpillar team is looking forward to working with Rio Tinto to apply our proven mining equipment and technology and to implement addiঞonal MineStar ™ autonomy soluঞons at Koodaideri—a new mine designed to capitalise on leading-edge technology," said Denise Johnson, group president Resource Industries, Caterpillar Inc. "We are excited to work together to advance Rio Tinto's mine automaঞon and digitalisaঞon program." Koodaideri will deliver a new producঞon hub for Rio Tinto's iron ore business in the Pilbara. Construcঞon work has commenced, and first producঞon is expected in late 2021. Once complete, the mine will have an annual capacity of 43 million tonnes, underpinning producঞon of the Pilbara Blend, Rio Tinto's flagship iron ore product. As mine construcঞon advances, WesTrac will manage logisঞcs of mining machine delivery and commissioning and will play a key role in implemenঞng technology soluঞons. "WesTrac is excited to be part of the Koodaideri project and to work with Caterpillar to deliver groundbreaking equipment soluঞons to support Rio Tinto's Mine of the Future ™ vision," said Jarvas Croome, WesTrac Chief Execuঞve Officer. Marland Clutch recently introduced an automaঞc grease lubricaঞon system designed to eliminate the need to manually grease the labyrinth seals of popular Marland BCMA backstops. In many instances, Marland BCMA backstops are located in difficult to reach areas making regular grease maintenance very difficult. By installing the new automaঞc lubricaঞon system, regular grease maintenance is performed, but no longer requires maintenance personnel to be directly involved in this criঞcal daily process. In fact, the large grease capacity of the system allows for 6 or more months between refills. The automaঞc system is designed to provide regularly scheduled injecঞons of the proper volume of grease into the labyrinth seal to maintain a fresh grease barrier that protects the oil seals from outside contaminants and extends seal life. This automated process provides the highest level of protecঞon against external contaminants assuring years of service life. The automaঞc grease lubricaঞon system can be linked to Marland's new Smart Marland condiঞon monitoring system for an addiঞonal layer of protecঞon.
