Being Peru's largest producer of cop- per, with two open pit mines in full pro- ducঞon, o[en means that projects can be located as much as 100 kilometres apart. To ensure efficiency, SPCC has reorgan- ised its project management to administer hundreds of mining projects in simultane- ous operaঞon across a large geography. It chose Powerproject Enterprise from Elecoso[ to consolidate the planning and management of projects, enable collab- oraঞon by its team of coordinators, and replace disparate tools in use. A[er a very successful pilot, the so[- ware is now being used across 300 pro- jects. Apart from the obvious ঞme and money savings, this has improved report- ing, communicaঞon and transparency. Coordinaঞon challenges Carlos Noriega, Plant Engineering manager, recognised the difficulঞes faced by the Plant Engineering team to manage and co-ordinate its range of acঞviঞes. By idenঞfying the need for a more consistent approach to project and pro- gress management and coordinaঞon, and to reduce the stress of reporঞng on such a vast number of projects, Mr Noriega realised that the main challenge was the number of different so[ware soluঞons that were in use. Addiঞonally, the company's various sub-contractors used different project management tools, which made it hard to communicate and share informaঞon. "We considered several alternaঞves before choosing Powerproject. With Pow- erproject, the database stays within our own IT system. Plus, the flexible license opঞons allow us to share Powerproject among our workstaঞons and teams with- out addiঞonal cost." Mr Noriega believes that SPCC is gaining clear business benefits from the changeover to Powerproject. "For the first ঞme, we can see and review all our projects, and monitor the progress of them all. We now have bet- ter communicaঞons between depart- ments, co-ordinators, and contractors. The criঞcal path is now very well out- lined with Powerproject, so we see the impact any issues have on expenses and can easily check with contractors about the impact on ঞme," he said. It is also easier for the company to control its projects from start to finish. The reporঞng workload has been re- duced not just for co-ordinators but for those working directly on the projects. According to Mr Noriega, SPCC can now manage and control its resources, both human and technical, in a beer way with Powerproject. Minnovare has officially launched its new Producঞon Opঞmiser system for the underground metalliferous mine market. The revoluঞonary new system, suitable for installaঞon on all produc- ঞon rig makes and models, substanঞal- ly reduces blast hole drilling deviaঞon, which in turn reduces average diluঞon and downঞme including reduced sec- ondary drill and blasts, whilst improving overall fragmentaঞon and ore recovery. The system's hardware engages with Minnovare's new online client interface, Minnovare CORE, which uঞlises digital drill plans and plods that sync seamless- ly with exisঞng mine-planning so[ware to deliver unparalleled drill-data capture and analysis capability. The net result is a significant im- provement in drill and blast efficien- cy, producঞvity and responsiveness throughout the enঞre operaঞon. Minnovare Commercial Director, Mick Beilby commented that Minnovare had a lot of success in the exploraঞon drilling side of the market to date. "The iniঞal trials have seen our cli- ents reduce their average blast hole de- viaঞon by up to 60 per cent, which has in turn delivered an esঞmated reducঞon in diluঞon of up to 30 per cent. At the same ঞme benefiঞng from an increase in overall meters drilled, improved frag- mentaঞon and ore recovery. The down- stream impact on minerals processing and logisঞcal costs, as well as overall downঞme, is significant for your average mine site – potenঞally equaঞng to mil- lions of dollars every year," said Mr Beilby. Iniঞal on-site tesঞng of the Produc- ঞon Opঞmiser system was conducted over a six-month period at two prominent underground gold mines in Australia. Minnovare's Managing Director, Callum McCracken said "The input and overall engagement of our clients throughout the R&D process has been fundamental to the systems' ongoing development and final readiness. We're extremely thankful for their input and support, and we're all very pleased with the results."
