October-December 2015 | ASIA Miner | 65 Product News T HE new Caterpillar 16M3 Motor Grader fea- tures engineering enhancements that Cat says boost fuel economy, increase structural durability, simplify maintenance, add operator convenience and promote the safety of both the operator and those around the machine. The 16M3 is available in confgurations to meet engine emissions standards worldwide. The 16M3 is an essential machine for build- ing and maintaining mine haulage roads - to keep trucks running effciently and at the low- est cost per tonne of material moved. The 16M3 has a 4.9-metre moldboard and an average operating weight of 32,411kg. The motor grader is optimally sized for operations using 136-tonne or smaller trucks. The 16M3 features a Cat C13 ACERT en- gine with the Cat Optimized Variable-Horse- power system, which provides net power ratings from 290 to 348 horsepower. The engine is available in three confgurations to satisfy global emissions standards: US EPA Tier 4 Final/EU Stage IV/ Japan 2014 (Tier 4 Final) ; Tier 3/Stage IIIA /Japan 2006 (Tier 3) equivalent; and Tier 2/Stage II/Japan 2001 (Tier 2) equivalent. A new ECO mode, standard for Tier 2 equivalent and Tier 4 engines, is designed to improve fuel economy by optimizing engine speed to 1900 rpm in working gears when possible with no compromise in perfor- mance. This operator-selected feature de- livers fuel savings estimated to be as much as 4 to 5%, compared with working in com- parable light to moderate load applications with the system deactivated. An additional engine control system feature provides consistent power to the ground by continually adjusting the engine to compensate for power losses to the cooling fan. Also new for the 16M3 is the OK-to-Start system, which automatically checks the en- gine coolant, engine oil and hydraulic oil lev- els when the key is turned to the on position. The system also monitors these levels and the trans-axle oil level during operation, and it alerts the operator if levels drop too low. The Cat direct-drive, power-shift transmis- sion, with eight forward and six reverse gears, incorporates the Cat Advanced Productivity Electronic Control Strategy system, designed to smooth gear changes and promote pro- ductivity. The modular trans-axle now has a standard automatic differential lock, which ensures appropriate locking/unlocking for op- timum traction and maneuvering, thus averting possible damage from ill-timed manual con- trol. The 16M3 also features nearly 15% greater dynamic braking torque at the rear tandems, achieved by enlarging both the brake disc diameter and the piston area. A new manual brake wear indicator simplifes disc wear mea- surement, eliminating having to remove the brake pods to check wear. KONECRANES remote monitoring and reporting service TRUCONNECT allows stainless steel manufacturer POS- CO-Thainox, based in Rayong, Thailand, to monitor crane duty and effectively plan maintenance according to the specif- ic needs of each crane. POSCO-Thainox, the frst cold-rolled stainless steel manu- facturer in Thailand, has two Konecranes CXT cranes installed at Rayong, each with two hoists and specially designed for lifting steel coils. One is a 36/3.2 tonne crane and the other is a 30/3.2 tonne crane, both of which have TRUCONNECT installed. "Our cranes work 24 hours a day – they never stop. The Konecranes units never malfunction or break down, so we can rely on them to avoid any downtime," said POSCO-Thainox project electrical engineer Nirat Nasomsri. "TRUCONNECT is really useful for monitoring our cranes' usage. With the cranes operating around the clock, we have to plan any maintenance or servicing very effectively to avoid disruptions to our operations," he said. Konecranes also have the maintenance contract for the two cranes, so they are able to provide an effcient service from their Rayong service centre. The stainless steel manufactured by POSCO-Thainox is used in a wide range of applications such as automotive and transportation, building and construction, electrical applianc- es, food processing, medical equipment, heavy industry, whitegoods and kitchen tools. TRUCONNECT provides users with a clear view of their crane's usage through continuous data collection. For the customer, this means improved safety and higher effciency The new Cat 16M3 Motor Grader is an ideal machine for building and maintaining mine haulage roads. New motor grader from Cat Optimizing crane use with TRUCONNECT because crane maintenance can be planned according to the crane's actual usage. TRUCONNECT offers distinct benefts for users: • Overloads, emergency stops and other safety issues are captured and clearly brought to the user's attention for possible corrective ac- tions, such as operator training to improve the safety and productivity of the worksite. • It helps optimize the right maintenance at the right time, based on real crane usage. • The user can see how the crane is actually used and what is the estimated remaining service life of certain components so they can plan and budget crane maintenance actions with greater confdence.
